After the standard warmup with games, some further work on synergy and posture we moved swiftly into the competency based training going through the technical principles behind and arm lock and how to deliver a backhand across the face. Given that the group was made from experienced individuals this evening this was covered very quickly with examination given to the technicalities of the actions rather than specific acting, although I fear that the lull in acting practice may soon be coming to an end.

After a short break we restarted in two separate groups. The one group working towards preparation for the gladiatorial event at Stevenage with fight practice and some experimentation with dual sword use for the ladies, who plan on fighting as dimachaerii.  The other group spending their time examining the use stage combat with the medieval sword drills we have been practicing from Talhoffer and Fiore.

After training we spent time preparing for the trip to the Living History Market this coming Saturday, looking at some new armour a couple of the group had, had made for them and discussing plans for the coming few months.

  • 19th February 2009, Basics and Year review

Training this evening was given across to a review of elements of the basic syllabus with emphasis given to falls and the two basic throws, the hip throw and leg sweep.

The evening went well enough with everyone getting stuck into the warm up and games at the beginning. We have been making a bit of a study of moving more on the balls of our feet than the modern heel toe movement; this is intended to help us as we work our way through the specific 1360 costumed fighting as they do not have rivets on their feet. Although research is being conducted by group members into the alternatives worn by soldiers during our chosen period, from bare feet to twine ropes wound round the feet.

During the break we reviewed the coming shows and gave an update for the coming year, which promises to be very interesting and quite diverse for us.

The second session saw us concentrate upon how to fall when thrown to the floor and how the attacker properly lowers the opponent to the ground rather than flinging them over and hoping for the best.

An explaination was given of the basi compentency standard we are hoping to set and evaluate members upon once a year, allowing infrequent members to be more able to participate in events and training without cause for concern over their abilities.

Afterwards we all headed out for coffee and a bite to eat.

This weeks training was given over to covering a tour de force of basics as we made our way through the competency based training exercises that build up to our annual certification.

Making our way through the principles of punching, kicking and kneeing everyone in attendance had a thoroughly good time. Being shown the technique, practicing it through with a partner and then having the return carried out on them. Revising the technical elements was the order of the day, so thespians had a relax and those of us not so brave to act fully had a reprieve, but acting and stage fight go hand in hand, so the reprieve will only be for so long.

The evening was finished with a none historical look at the basics of sword attack and defence, with sets of static fives being completed, again looking for technical accuracy. The first time for sword work with one of those present it was interesting going as they learnt to relax with the weapon and rely more upon technique than strength.

Next week we will continue with the competency based training in the first half of the session and then break out into training and rehearsals for the coming gladiator event at Stevenage.
